12-month reading roadmap

One page to plan a year of reading with intent. Twelve monthly slots, quarterly review checkpoints, and a prompt for the one book you deliberately don't finish. Best filled in mid-December for the year ahead, or on your birthday for a personal-year cycle.

When to use this

  • Mid-December for the year ahead, or on your birthday for a personal-year cycle.
  • After a reading year where you finished less than you expected and want to plan with more intent.
  • When you notice the reading pile has drifted from goals into ‘whatever caught my eye.’

How to complete it

  • Set the year theme first — one sentence. Every book slot then answers ‘how does this serve the theme?’
  • Leave 2-3 monthly slots deliberately blank. You’ll want space to react to books mid-year without breaking the plan.
  • Actually schedule the quarterly reviews — put Mar / Jun / Sep / Dec in a calendar. The compounding value is in the reviews, not the reading.

Common mistakes

  • Filling all 12 slots up-front then feeling behind by March. Under-plan; over-execute.
  • Skipping the ‘book you don’t finish’ prompt. Naming it in advance makes abandoning a book a feature, not a failure.
  • Choosing books to signal identity (‘the kind of person who reads X’) rather than serve the theme.

Year / start month

Reading theme for the year (one sentence)

e.g. “Build a working understanding of statistics” · “Deeper Russian literature” · “Money, seriously, once and for all.”

Monthly plan

For each month: the book title + why this book this month + one success-sign to notice at month-end. Leave slots blank if you want space to react to the year as it goes.

The book you don't finish

Reading with intent means it's fine to abandon books mid-way when the value has been extracted, or when the book turns out not to be for you. Name the book you expect to abandon and what you'll have learned by then.
